Do you know what my absolute most favorite thing in the whole entire world is? (Besides traveling, hiking and writing?) Planning Vacations. I know. Weird right? My parents always tell me I should have been a travel agent. I get SO GEEKED about researching new places to explore. Want to know how serious this problem is?! I have a notebook FILLED with vacation itineraries for around the world. So that someday, when we can finally afford it, Trev and I can take some seriously epic vacations.
And that my friends, is why I’m so stoked to be bringing this post to you today!
A few weeks ago, I did a post on last minute Spring Break ideas. And I still think that all of those locations are amazing choices! I even mentioned a fun last minute spot for families. But most of those trips were geared toward adults. (So if you’re an adult, traveling with other adults, go ahead and click here!)
But personally, I am a firm believer in traveling with children. I don’t think that there is any better way for kids to learn about a new culture, place and people than to be totally immersed in it. Now, this post is Last Minute Family Spring Break Getaways, so obviously, you’re probably not heading to Dubai last minute any time soon. But thats the great thing about America. Our country is a melting pot filled with different cultures, people and histories all there waiting for you and your family to explore.
So I sat down and I really thought about it. Where would I take my kids if I wanted to plan a last minute trip for Spring Break?
Well… I had one answer and one answer alone pop into my head. But I promise… I’m going to give you five. Let’s get started, shall we?
If I had to pick one place that is PERFECT for a last minute vacation, it would be DC. This city is so vibrant, so full of life, and so full of history. It’s a place your entire family will love. And then best part? Pretty much everything you’re going to want to see is 100% FREE. Nope. Your eyes aren’t deceiving you. All that amazing history that’s just waiting to be seen? It’s completely free. From the National Mall, to Arlington Cemetery and everything in-between, you won’t pay a penny. The theory in DC is that the landmarks and artifacts belong to the American people. So grab your walking shoes (you’re going to need them) buy a metro card, and get your family to DC. (PS… it’s also about to be cherry blossom time!!!) You can find some awesome hotel deals for DC here. Staying in this city is always super convenient, however, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the National Harbor area. It’s super easy to hop on the metro and head into the city during the day, and then you have your own little world at night. Learn more about National Harbor here.
If you’re from the Mid West, chances are, you already know how great the city of Chicago is. And if you’re not, you’re about to find out. From adventures and culture, to culinary excellence and my beloved Lake Michigan, The Windy City is a place you want to visit. Trust me. Take your kids to some seriously stellar museums, take pictures in Millennium Park, catch a game at Wrigley Field, be on top of the world at
Sears Willis Tower, go shopping on The Magnificent Mile, check out the Lincoln Park Zoo, and eat a Chicago Dog (or 20). This city will steal a piece of your heart. You can find a list of the best hotels in Chicago here, but everyone knows the best deals in Chicago are here!
Tybee Island, Georgia
Let’s head to the South y’all. When I think of the best cities in the South, Savannah Georgia comes to mind. It’s beautiful, historic, and filled to the brim with that sweet southern charm. But let’s be honest, if I’m heading South for Spring Break, I want to be able to head to the beach. Enter Tybee Island. Only a short 30 minute drive from Savannah, you’ll find yourself in another world as soon as you cross the bridge to “Savannah’s Beach.” With miles of public beach, piers, deep sea fishing, shopping and restaurants, you will absolutely fall in love with this little beach town. And I can promise you, your entire family will be asking when they can go back. Find a last minute rental here or book a room here.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
If you’ve been with me for awhile, you know that I pretty much left my heart in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I love this place so much. (Heck, we love it so much we named our cat after it!) And I know you, and your families, will too. (Unless you’re looking for a warm, sunny beach. Then you’ll hate it.) If your family loves to ski, take them skiing this Spring Break with some INSANE deals from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Spend the days on the slopes, and the evenings in town. You can check out my posts on Jackson Hole here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. Keep in mind, I visited in the summer. So you won’t be able to do all the things I did. However, Jackson Hole has SO MANY AMAZING THINGS TO OFFER any season of the year. Check out the deals then book your family Ski-cation here, and then read this awesome post on making the most of it!
Okay. So what is a Spring Break post without an island getaway? I know. Not as budget friendly, and for sure kind of crazy to plan last minute. However, sometimes, our last minute decisions turn out to be our very best.
Do you want all the beauty of the Caribbean, but don’t want to pay Rush Fees on passports for your family? Head to the US Virgin Islands. You can choose just one island to spend your time on, or island hope between all three. Looking for luxury? St. Thomas is your bet. It’s literally Yacht City. Want to spend some time with nature? St. John’s has it. And last but not least, is St. Croix. A little less touristy, and a little more historic. Learn more about each of these islands here, and when you decide which one is best for you, head over here for a list of the best family friendly resorts.
Go all out. And go to Atlantis. If you have the money to spend on a last minute island getaway, just do your family a favor and book a trip to Atlantis. If you’ve never been, you’re in for a freakin’ treat. This place is magical. And your family will LOVE it. If your Spring Break is starting soon, or a little bit later in April, you can book an “all inclusive package” for an absolute STEAL. However, Black Out Dates do apply from April 6-15th. And if your Spring Break just so happens to be during that time, have no fear. There are plenty of other options at the resort for you. For more information on this awesome resort, click here. And if you’re interested, book fast!
Anddddd if any of you decide that you’re going to take one of these great vacations, consider leaving a little room in your suitcase for yours truly 🙂
Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone!
I’m back tomorrow with how to have the Ultimate Family Staycation at home.
