You guys… I’m SO pumped about today’s post! Why? Because it is near and dear to my heart, and honestly, I’ve just really been missing home lately! My job has been keeping me so busy, I don’t get Up North nearly as much as I wish I could. So I figured… why not fill the void by writing about it?!
TWO Mondays ago, I shared with you a quick little Winter Weekend Getaway idea as the first post in this little mini Mitten Monday series. (Wondering where I recommended? Click here!) Well today, I’m FINALLY bringing you my second post in this series, with the final post going up next Monday, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Ahhhh. Home Sweet Home.
There is no place in the world like the one that you call home. Usually, it’s the kind of place you can’t wait to leave while you’re growing up, and can’t wait to come back to after you move away. It’s where your family is. It’s where all your happy memories are. It’s where you feel happy and one of your favorite places in this world. For me, Home is Manistee, Michigan.
Manistee is situated right on Lake Michigan, and gets the “Up North” stamp of approval. It’s small enough for everyone to know each other, yet big enough to have a little bit of everything to keep you busy. And as it turns out, my home, that I couldn’t wait to get away from when I was young, is a tourists dream.
While I would normally recommend visiting in the Summer (it’s the best time of year, tbh) Manistee is still the PERFECT place for a quiet weekend getaway with your friends, family or the one you love.
Where to Stay: Pick a cottage, any cottage. The summer people who own the condos and lakefront cottages are gone for the season and put their places up for rent on websites like Home Away and VRBO. So you can stay right on Lake Michigan for literally a quarter of the price it would cost you in the summertime!
Or, if you’re looking for a hotel, check into The Ramsdell Inn. It’s super cute, super Manistee, and super close to TJs pub. (More on that one later!)
What to Do: Sit back and relax! This is your weekend to getaway from the rest of the world. Take a walk on the beach (it’s actually really pretty in the winter!), catch a winter sunset, go for a ski (downhill at Crystal or cross country on one of our many trails), shop downtown, take a drive up M22 and eat. Eat so much food. Speaking of…
Where to Eat:
- TJs Pub This is easily my favorite place to eat in Manistee! I could eat a dang Cubano every single day. I love TJs because it’s cozy, the staff is friendly and everything there is so dang good! Pull up a seat next to the fire place and snuggle in for the most perfect afternoon or evening at The Pub!
- The Fillmore I love The Fillmore. It’s a coffee shop by morning, and an awesome restaurant and bar by night. All of their food is locally sourced, and made in house with the freshest ingredients. From pizzas to Dirty Blonde Fries (my fav!) and everything in between, you’ll love the food and the atmosphere at The Fillmore.
- North Channel Brewing Manistee’s newest hot spot is NCB. The food is outstanding the the atmosphere is too. I wasn’t a huge fan of their beer just yet. (They were all pretty bitter in my opinion.) However, I was there when their first batches of beer were still being served. I fully believe that over time, their beer will only get better and better!
- Big Al’s You can’t make a trip to Manistee without eating this Manistee staple. We love our Big Al’s and dip EVERYTHING in Sub Sauce. And one trip here, you will too. Big Al’s isn’t fancy. It’s old and greasy looking. But they crank our the best pizza, strom and subs in the county. And no matter what you get, get some sub sauce on the side. Because it will change your life.
Can’t Miss Events
To be honest… there really isn’t a whole lot of events here in the winter. However, you can easily check out whats up in the county here!
Alright guys, I’m sorry this post is so dang short! I’ve had a seriously crazy day and have to get moving. I’m feeling ragged already and I’m not even half way through my Monday. Ugh.
Curious to learn a bit more about Manistee? Find an in-depth look at the county here, or just check out 90% of my weekend round ups or other posts about my home town here. (You’ll find restaurants, places to visit, sights to see… pretty much everything I love!)
I hope you’re all having a much better Monday than me! I can’t wait to get home and snuggle up with Trev to watch The Bachelor 🙂
