Alright friends. I want you to stop and think back to the last time you’ve had a truly excellent nights sleep. One where you’ve felt completely at peace despite what might be going on in your life. One where you didn’t toss and turn and wake up a million times during the night. One where you fell asleep right away and didn’t lay awake anxiously remembering that super embarrassing thing you did in the 5th grade. And one where you woke up actually feeling rested the next morning.
I don’t know about you, but the last time I slept THAT well was back in 2013. It was after a perfect day hiking the Tetons and I was exhausted. I fell asleep with the windows open and the sounds of the crickets and owls and the fresh mountain air lulled me to sleep.
On an average night, in the middle of the suburbs of Detroit with the
elephants people that live above us, the car alarms ringing and Jacksy Cat singing the song of his people, my sleep was less than stellar. Even on nights that I went to bed early, my Fitbit was showing that 75% of my sleep was restless… it was no wonder that I wasn’t feeling rested.
It also doesn’t help that I get very, very, very anxious. Mix in what I’m pretty positive is SAD every year as November rolls around, you can bet that the circles under my eyes were growing bigger and darker by the day.
So I started looking into things that could help my anxiety and help me sleep better. Time after time, the simple, easy “fix” seemed to be a weighted blanket. Nothing I read ever claimed to cure my anxiety, but they did promise to relax and calm my body, helping me to feel more at ease and sleep better.
However, I wasn’t ever sure that I wanted to spend THAT much money on something that I had no idea if it would work. Then, one day, as I was mindlessly scrolling Insta (a really fantastic hobby of mine) I noticed all my favorite Bachelor stars pimping out BlanQuils. I instantly thought the name was hilarious, and decided that if it was good enough for The Tolberts, it was good enough for me. So I book marked the webpage just in case I decided to get one.
Fast forward to December and my MIL got me a weighted blanket for Christmas! I was so excited when I opened it up. I couldn’t wait to try it out. It wasn’t a BlanQuil, but a Sharper Image 15 pound weighted blanket. It was filled with these little beads that rolled around as I slept. One night, Trev decided to try it and he really, really loved it. He slept so much better after one nights use, I couldn’t take it back from him. I knew he needed it just as much as I did, if not more.
So we decided to bite the bullet and get a second weighted blanket. Since he really loved the way the beads fell around him with the Sharper Image blanket, I let him keep it and I decided to purchase the BlanQuil for myself.
And guys… BEST.DECISION. EVER.
The BlanQuil claims to use compression therapy to create the feeling of being hugged, naturally helping to reduce stress and anxiety. “The concept is that a weighted blanket works like deep pressure touch stimulation (DPTS), similar to how a massage works. While light touches wake the nervous system, deep pressure has a relaxing, calming effect on the body — which is why parents swaddle babies to calm them. A weighted blanket is essentially applying this concept to adults, since we don’t outgrow the comfort of what essentially feels like one long, nice hug. A weighted blanket applies pressure to the body throughout the night, creating a sense of calm and “grounding” that relaxes the nervous system, encourages dopamine and serotonin production (which later converts to melatonin, making you sleepy), and actually measurably reduces or eliminates pain and stress.” (Thanks Business Insider. I couldn’t have said that better myself!)
I purchased the 15 pound BlanQuil and I couldn’t be happier with how it works. Every night, Trev lays my blanket on top of me and it snuggles me in like a burrito. I really love that the BlanQuil even distributes the weight so my entire body feels the effects of the blanket. It’s just heavy enough that I can’t move around as easily.* (If you don’t like to feel constricted you may not like sleeping under this particular weighted blanket.) This helps me to fall asleep almost instantly. I find myself waking up the next morning in the exact same position and feeling that “OMG I just slept SO GOOD” type of way.
*TBH, I have zero idea what is in a BlanQuil that makes it heavy. It’s unique in that it’s not filled with little silicon beads (like Trev’s blanket) like most weighted blankets. I really like this because the weight doesn’t shift and helps me to stay in one spot at night. Like I mentioned above, it almost constricts me, wrapping me up super tight, which is a feeling I have always loved since I was a baby. Trev likes the beads that are in the larger pockets on his blanket because the weight shifts around his body with him as he moves. He doesn’t feel pinned down, a feeling that he can’t stand.
I’ve also noticed that this blanket really helps me when I’m feeling anxious. Before my BlanQuil, I would have Trev hug me as tight as he could until I felt better. Now, I just wrap up in my weighted blanket and notice a calmness begin to wash over me within minutes.
Another great thing? It has a removable cover so that I can take it off and wash it when I spill all over it.
I’m telling you. This blanket is the real deal. I love it so much that I take it with me wherever I go. Don’t believe me? Ask Jackson.
Even my cat, who barely likes anything, loves my BlanQuil.
SO, in conclusion, if you’re looking to sleep better, you NEED to try a weighted blanket. You should shop around and decide which is best for you because everyone likes something a little bit different. (Like I mentioned above!) I highly suggest going to a store and physically feeling different types before making your purchase. That being said, I personally don’t think you’ll find a better weighted blanket than a BlanQuil! (And this is my unsponsored opinion. I really just love this blanket so much!)
If you’re not sure how much weight you should purchase, the general rule of thumb is 10% of your body weight, plus three pounds. BlanQuil recommends that adults weighing between 100-140 pounds purchase a 15 pound weight while adults weighing 140+ should purchase a 20 pound weight to achieve the best “bear hug” for your body.
And don’t forget to search for a discount code before you purchase! As I said, this isn’t sponsored so I don’t have one for you. Check your favorite Bachelor contestants Instagrams though. You’ll most likely find 20% off 🙂
OR if you have Amazon Prime (which is literally pretty much everyone) grab it here so you don’t have to pay for shipping.
Do you use a weighted blanket? Which one is your favorite?! Let me know in the comments below!
Alright my loves! I’m off to start this v. long week with a smile on my face. I’m already ready to be back home under my BlanQuil, snuggled up on the couch for Hometowns! Do you think the Fence Jump is going to happen tonight? (I know the answer to this because I read spoilers. HAHA)
Have a wonderful Monday everyone! I’ll be back tomorrow.
