Cast Iron Apple Crumble with Hudsonville Ice Cream

Hi Loves! It’s officially September which means I can finally say without sounding like a crazy person… BRING ON ALL THINGS FALL! I’m beyond excited for apple orchard dates, crunchy leaves, cozy nights watching Hocus Pocus, Thanksgiving dinner, cooler weather, and all the yummy fall treats. 

From the decor in my home, to the food I eat and everything in between, I strive to bring the cozy vibes all fall long. And while I might be ready to jump into pumpkin spice everything the second the sun sets on Labor Day weekend, I know a lot of people (lookin’ at you Trev!) prefer to hold on to summer as long as they possibly can. 

Which is why, every September, I look for ways to combine my favorite fall flavors with Trev’s favorite summer treat… ice cream! And this year, I get to do it with my friends at Hudsonville Ice Cream! 

Remember a few months back, when I had the chance to share Hudsonville’s Extra Indulgent ice cream flavors?! Well I’m teaming up with them again to bring you a classic fall dessert…a la mode! 

So grab your apron and let’s get to it! Today, we’re making Cast Iron Apple Crumble! 

Here’s what you’ll need! 

For the Filling 

  • 5 medium size cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped 
  • ½ cup granulated sugar 
  • ¼ cup apple cider 
  • 1 tablespoon apple pie spice 
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Pinch of salt 

For the Topping 

  • 1 ¼ cups old fashioned oats 
  • 2 tablespoons flour 
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold) 
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar 
  • Pinch of salt 
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon 

To Top It Off  

Directions 

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. While your oven is preheating, peel, core and chop up your apples. Everyone has their own preference on what apples cook the best. Personally, I like apples that are tart… like Granny Smith. However, I chose red apples to bake with today simply because red went “with my ~aesthetic~ for photos better.” (Do it for the blog, am I right?) Once your apples are chopped, set them to the side. 

In a large mixing bowl, combine granulated sugar, apple cider, apple pie spice and salt. Add in apples and toss to coat. 

In a cast iron skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter. Once butter is melted, add your apples! Cook until apples begin to soften. (It took mine about 5 minutes.) Remove pan from heat, and set to the side. It’s time to make the topping! 

For the topping, combine old fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar and salt. Give it a couple of stirs until ingredients appear well combined. Next, start adding in butter, breaking it apart with your fingers until the chunks are pea sized. 

Now, add your topping to the top of your apples! Be sure it is well covered. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top and bake for 35-40 minutes. The filling should be bubbly and the top should be crispy. 

Once your crumble is baked, it’s time for the best part… the ice cream! Serve your apple crumble with a scoop of Hudsonville Creamery Vanilla Blend and a drizzle of salted caramel sauce if you want a classic dessert, or try something new and add a scoop (or two) of Hudsonville Seaside Caramel
