10 Podcasts You Should Be Listening To

Hey Hey! Happy Thursday my Loves! It’s almost Friday and I couldn’t be happier! Today, I’ve got a special guest with me to help out with today’s post!

Yeah… because you listen to crap podcasts.

Can you feel my eyes rolling already?! My handsome hubby (who just stepped out into the blog world, click here to check out Cleans are for Closers!) is here to shamelessly plug his new blog help me share 10 Podcasts You Should Be Listening To.

We like to listen to podcasts when we travel because they are so entertaining. One of my true loathes in this world other than mediocrity, is driving. I hate to drive anywhere. I just don’t like to be in the car. I’m better if I’m just a passenger, but I still don’t want to be there. Just ask Savannah and her parents about our trip to Jackson Hole. Of the 4 billion hours it took (seemed like it at least) I drove for about an hour, and slept the other 98% of the time. To get through my painful journey to and from anywhere, I’ve found that podcasts can make my trip a little less miserable. They make the time go faster, and we feel like we’re able to learn something, escape reality (or if you’re Savannah dive head first into reality tv) or even grow personally or, in my case, professionally with the words and wisdom of others.

Whether you’re looking to listen to a podcast that makes you feel like you’re drinking wine with your girls, learning about the world, or just listening to a really great story, we’ve got you covered. We’re sharing our 10 favorite podcasts with you today!

We’re going to start with my 5 Favorite Podcasts! If you know anything about me, you know that I’m a reality tv JUNKIE. Like seriously. I’m an addict. So it makes no surprise that legit all of my favorite podcasts are either about Reality TV or by Reality TV stars.

Me. Summed up in 3 words.

I Don’t Get It. I love the I Don’t Get It podcast because these girls are SO.DANG.RELATABLE. I legit find myself being like “OMG THEY GET ME!” every time I listen to the show. Ashley, Lauren and Naz cover everything that they don’t get in life, and usually have a special guest that helps them learn about the topic they don’t get. Some are super interesting and you learn a lot, and some are just hilariously amazing. Listen here.

The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast. You know I love me some Bachelor so OF COURSE my favorite Bachelor ever, Ben Higgins, podcast is making my list! Ashley I and Ben are a match made in podcast heaven when it comes to recapping my favorite reality show. Because they are part of The Bachelor Fam, they always have guests and insider information! Plus, they don’t ever really have a “negative” undertone to what they say like other podcasts I listen to, just because they are so close to The Bachelor franchise. And unlike my other Bachelor podcasts, they’re around all year long! But they are for sure at their best when they are recapping the recent Bachelor episodes. Listen here.

Here to Make Friends / The Betchelor. I’m grouping these two podcasts together because they are super, super, super similiar. If you love reading the Betches Bachcaps you will love these two podcasts! The Betchelor is the same girls that write the recaps, and they’re just as funny to listen to as they are to read. (If not funnier!) My only complaint is that their podcast is pretty short… I would love for it to be longer! The other podcast, Here to Make Friends. It’s actually a Huff Post Podcast. The hosts, Emma and Claire, are really funny. They do have some v. strong political and feminist views. So if you don’t want your Bachcaps with a side of politics, this may not be the podcast for you. Personally, I don’t care to mix politics into everyday conversations, but I love everything they have to say about the show! They’re the perfect mix of snarky and sweet and they have a ton of alums come on and co-host! Listen here and here.

Rob Has a Podcast. This one is for my CBS reality show lovers! I found Rob Has a Podcast a few months ago when I was reading a Survivor recap by Stephen Fishbach. He mentioned how he does a podcast with Rob Cesternino and I decided to check it out. And it’s soooo good! Especially if you love hearing about the ins and outs of Survivor… because not only does he recap, but he has past contestants on to talk strategy, recently voted out contestants for exit interviews and he’s got a really great podcast voice. (There are some podcasts I won’t listen to if I don’t like their voice, tbh.) Listen here.

Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness. This is my newest podcast love! I always finish this one feeling smarter, more worldly, or like I have the tools I need to empathize with those around me a little bit more.  JVN is the best thing to come out of Queer Eye (obvs) and he literally sparkles his way through my headphones helping me learn more on things that I’m curious about too. Listen here.

Looking for something with a little more depth?! My boo probably has you covered.

Podcasts are an extremely useful tool to fill the time to and from work (which is when I listen to most of them) or when you’re doing some cleaning around the house or cooking dinner for the night. They can expose us to other thoughts and ideas that we wouldn’t normally be exposed to. I try to do the things I can to learn and grow as a person, husband, and coach. Listening to some podcasts gives me the chance to digest some really good information and try to put it into action. There is always a chance to look a bit beyond the podcast and gather more information (which I suggest you do), but listening can be a first step. There are also times that I need to relax and not think too much so I turn to a few podcasts that let me turn off for a bit and laugh my way home.

The following are my 5 Go-To Podcasts, not in any particular order.

The Art of Manliness. Brett McCay hosts the Art of Manliness which is a “blog dedicated to the lost art of being a man.” He interviews mostly authors, public figures, or anyone who epitomizes the idea of what a man should be. On the surface, this one seems a little one sided, focusing only on men. It’s not as bad as it seems, there are a lot of interviews that talk about amazing stories (check out the one about the real life James Bond, Episode #225), or building your social capital (see #393 with Jordan Harbinger), or being healthy and strong (#302 with Matt Reynolds of Starting Strength). Lots of great info, highly recommended. Listen hereYou actually should listen to this one… even I like it!

Power Athlete Radio. This one is a strength and conditioning (S&C) focused podcast, but you’ll like this one even if you aren’t a strength coach. It’s not just about coaching… they interview a myriad of people in different arenas like psychology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning (obviously), neuroscience, among other disciplines. Their aim is to “Battle the Bullshit” and “Unlock Athletic Potential” as well as arm you with better info to make a larger impact on the people you work with. Another podcast that’s really similar to this one is the Central VA Sports Performance Podcast. I think if you like Power Athlete Radio, you’d like this one too. Listen here

NSCA Coaching Podcast. Another S&C podcast hosted by Scott Caulfield, Head S&C Coach at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) headquarters. He mainly interviews coaches in the field on the things you don’t typically learn in school. It’s newer so there aren’t many episodes yet, but it’s very high quality. You might like this one if you’re a coach of any kind, or even an athlete. But someone like my wife isn’t going to appreciate it. #YouWinSomeYouLoseSome. Listen here

The Jordan Harbinger Show (Formerly of The Art of Charm). You may recognize the name from earlier, Jordan Harbinger was the host of The Art of Charm podcast, but has since moved into a new role. I enjoy listening to him on topics like communication, networking, or small talk, and taking his actionable advice and applying it to my daily life. Listen here

Crime in Sports. This is my oddball, feel-good, just need to unwind podcast. James and Jimmy are two stand-up comedians who research athletes who for some reason can’t stay out of trouble. They make fun of the athletes and their behavior and certainly don’t apologize for it. The episodes are crude, vulgar, and sometimes just wrong, but always hilarious. Highly recommended! Listen hereI also love this one!

I will also just search for an author or person I want to hear more about. For instance, I just finished reading “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance” by Angela Duckworth and instead of just searching thru my staples, I searched her name and found her on some other podcasts I don’t normally listen to. That way I could expand my listening a bit but still hone in on what I’m interested in.

And while our tastes in podcasts are totally opposite, there is one that we can agree on every.single.time. Small Town Murder is easily the best podcast we both listen to. It’s by the same guys that do Crime in Sports. If you love comedy and true crime, Small Town Murder is totally for you! Don’t worry. These guys NEVER make fun of the victim or the victim’s family. However, the small towns the crimes are committed in, and the murderers are totally fair game. If you even think you might be the littlest bit interested, go check them out. We think you’ll love them! Seriously give them a chance. You might cringe a little, but you’ll laugh a lot. Just don’t start with Episode #74 “The Imperfect Storm in Rulo, Nebraska.” That one is for seasoned listeners… and not for the faint of heart. Savannah gagged for 98% of that one. True dat. Pick a different episode, and listen here!

And what would a “Best Of” post be without a few honorable mentions?! I also listen to Reality Steve, PS I Hate This Movie, Scrubbing in with Becca Tilley and Tanya Rad, Off The Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe and Betch Slapped.

And I also like…

Iron Game Chalk Talk. Another S&C podcast, Ron McKefferey is a former strength coach who now works for Plae and travels all over the world teaching coaches. He started the podcast while he was still coaching and mainly interviews other S&C coaches, but also has other influential people on that can glean some insight into making us better coaches.

The Tim Ferriss Show. This one is an every-once-in-a-while listen for me. Usually only when there’s a really interesting topic or guest because they can be quite long (2+ hours). His aim is to research and learn from the best to find out how they became the best. Guests include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Katie Couric, and Sir Richard Branson. I also really enjoy his books “Tools of Titans” and “Tribe of Mentors.”

Alright my Loves… what podcasts are we missing out on?! Let us know in the comments below!
